PTERYGIUM

Pterygium is a growth of fleshy tissue (has blood vessels) that may start as a pinguecula. It can remain small or grow large enough to cover part of the cornea. When this happens, it can affect your vision.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of pterygium can range from mild to severe. They include:

  • redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, mostly while the pterygium grows
  • a yellow spot or bump on the white of your eye
  • dry, itchy, burning eyes. Or feeling like sand or grit is stuck in your eye
  • blurry vision

Risk factors that cause pterygium are: The eyes are continuously exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight for long periods of time. Moreover, pterygium also caused by dry eyes and various environment, which can lead to eye irritation, such as dust, smoke, wind and air. Therefore, this disease is common in tropical countries with lots of sunlight. and in people who always have to work or like to do outdoor activities.

Avoiding and protecting yourself from pterygium

lf, you have had a pterygium at least once before, try to avoid the things that cause these growths. Here are some ways:

  • wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light
  • protect your eyes from dust by wearing glasses or goggles
  • use artificial tears when your eyes are dry

Pterygium Diagnosis available at Thai eye center

  • Your ophthalmologist can treat the discomfort, redness or swelling from a pterygium with lubricating or steroid eye drops.
  • If a pterygium grows large enough to cause problems, your ophthalmologist will probably recommend surgery to remove it. Once the pterygium is removed, your surgeon may transplant a thin piece of normal tissue onto the affected area. This technique helps reduce the chance that your pterygium will grow back.

Preperation for Pterygium Surgery

  • Stop using Antiplatelet 7 days prior surgery
  • Washing your face and hairs before surgery
  • Apply artificial tear eyedrop to prevent dry eye
  • No make up on surgery day

Post Operative Care

  • Avoiding water go into your eyes, which cause eye irritation and inflammation.
  • Using Normal Saline or clean water for cleaning around eyes
  • Do not rub your eyes to avoid eye infection
  • Patch your operative eye for 1 night and apply medicine following doctor instructions
  • Avoid dust and dirty particles from getting in your eyes
  • Contact doctor immediately if there is abnormal symptoms.
